To effectively use bivalves to study evolution (and to make them more interesting and relevant subjects to your students), a brief introduction to the group is necessary, including something about their closest relatives (other mollusks), their important anatomical features, and their complex relationship with humans — including the positive use of bivalves for food and as ornamentation, as well as their negative effects on ecological systems and human economy and health.
